The first escape

The First Escape from the Historic SDG Jail occurred just 2 years after the jail was built, in 1835. The escape involved a total of 4 inmates, including a man named Robert Quinn, who was being tried for murder along with his brother. This escape occurred in the original cellblock, which, at the time, would have had a woodstove which prisoners received wood to burn in order to keep the temperature decent. Due to the age of this prison, the entrance of this cell block was a wooden door, which the prisoners decided that they could burn through the door using the wood they got for the stove, compromising it so that they could escape from the jail. These 4 inmates were never found.
